Supporting Neurodivergent Students on Placement - a Guide

These resources are intended as a starting point for conversations between placement educators and students, to help support neurodivergent students on placement.

These conversations should be active and revisited at different points throughout the placement. This is important because, as a student gains experience and confidence, they may become better able to identify and communicate their needs. This guide is not exhaustive, but it offers a foundation for providing more effective support to neurodivergent students. If you would like more in-depth training and resources please contact us for more information.

Neurodivergency

A quick reminder - neurodivergency refers to the natural variation in human brain function, encompassing conditions such as autism and ADHD. Neurodivergent and neurotypical brain types are not better or worse than one another — they are simply different, often excelling in different areas.

Embracing and adapting for neurodivergent students on placement fosters diverse perspectives, innovation, and creativity. This enhances problem-solving and inclusivity, ultimately contributing to a more dynamic and effective team — and a stronger future workforce.
