Given the right support and environment, neurodivergent students can bring incredible strengths and ways of thinking that contribute to a more diverse, creative, and innovative approach to learning, development, and problem-solving within placement settings.

Individuality

It is important to remember that every neurodivergent student has a unique profile and skill set, so their experiences and needs may vary widely. Avoid making assumptions based on diagnosis β€” this can lead to overlooking both support needs and individual strengths.

Potential challenges

It is important to remember that every neurodivergent student has a unique profile, so their experiences may vary widely. Not all neurodivergent students will experience all of the following challenges, but some might. However, it’s more likely that students will experience a combination of these difficulties with varying levels of severity.

  • Sensory processing challenges

  • Social and communication challenges

  • Executive functioning challenges

  • Emotional regulation challenges

  • Working memory challenges

  • Strong need for routine and sameness

  • Difficulties with unpredictable routines and unexpected changes
